Supporting Brain Health: The Key to Improving Cognition and Memory

Supporting brain health is a major key to improving our cognition and memory. Brain health can be impacted by a variety of different lifestyle factors, diet and environment. It is becoming more and more common for people to begin experiencing cognitive and memory difficulties at younger ages and many of these factors could be contributing to that occurence.

One major aspect that can contribute to memory and cognitive decline is the development of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance develops over many years and impacts the ability of the brain to use glucose as energy. Because glucose is the brain's main energy source this can lead to a noticeable decline in mental function. In fact one of the first symptoms of insulin resistance may be brain fog and poor memory long before there is an actual rise in blood sugar levels.

Poor nutrition status can also contribute to poor mental function. When a large majority of an individuals diet consists of processed foods, much of the nutritional value is missing. Some important nutrients for mental function include omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin D and magnesium.
